A forklift operates on a stability triangle formed by the front drive axle wheels and the rear steer axle pivot. As a load is lifted or carried, the combined center of gravity moves. Keeping the load low to the ground (4 to 6 inches above the surface) during travel keeps the center of gravity low and stable.
Forks should be spaced as wide as practical for the load pallet to prevent lateral tipping. Tilting the mast back slightly cradles the load against the load backrest extension, locking it in place during deceleration and turns.
When driving up or down ramps with a load, the load should always face uphill to maintain weight on the drive axle. Smooth acceleration and controlled steering prevent dynamic weight transfers that could compromise stability.
