When a roller engages its eccentric vibratory shaft, the engine experiences a heavy parasitic load. Adequate engine horsepower ensures that driving up inclines or over loose sub-base material does not cause engine bog or RPM drops, which would otherwise alter vibration frequency.
Maintaining consistent travel speed and vibration amplitude allows compaction crews to reach required target density (such as 95% Proctor density) in fewer passes, reducing fuel usage and preventing over-compaction.
